Walker rescued and taken to hospital after falling while descending Mourne Mountains

A walker has been taken to hospital after falling in the Mourne Mountains.

Members of the Morne Mountain Rescue Team responded to the call out that a person had received a lower leg injury while descending Slieve Doan on Friday afternoon.

A HM Coastguard helicopter was tasked to the scene and the walker was taken from the mountain to hospital.

In a post on social media, Mourne Mountain Rescue Team said: "At 1621hrs we received a call to assist a walker who fell and sustained a lower leg injury while descending Doan.

"A team response dispatched and due to the nature of the terrain and challenges of extraction from the location, SAR air support was requested. R936 from Caernarfon responded and landed on scene.

"Having received initial treatment from walking companions, team members assessed and treated the casualty and, with help from the air crew and walkers, carried the injured person a short distance by stretcher to the helicopter for onward transit to hospital.

"Thanks to the heli crew and those who assisted. 9 members responded and stood down at 2012 hrs."

A spokesperson for the HM Coastguard said: "HM Coastguard are responding to an incident involving a person with a leg injury in the Mourne Mountains (Northern Ireland) today, Friday 11 April.

"Alerted at around 5pm, a HM Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon has been sent to the scene."
