VICTOR — An uncontrolled propane leak prompted an evacuation of Victor residents near 57 South Main Street on Friday, according to Teton County Fire and Rescue.
In a Facebook post, the agency said a vehicle hit the lid of a buried propane tank at about 10 a.m. Friday.
“The damage resulted in an uncontrolled propane leak,” officials said in the post.
The amount of propane leaking was enough that fire crews evacuated the area to ensure the public’s safety. Teton County Fire and Rescue personnel worked with Fall River to develop and implement a plan to get rid of propane remaining in the tank.
Residents were allowed to return by Friday evening, officials said, and businesses were once again open and operating as usual.
In the post, it was noted that Teton County relies on propane as a reliable source of energy.
“We see above ground and buried tanks all around the county,” the post read. “We take this opportunity to remind citizens to be safe around these tanks and respect the dangers associated (with them).”
If you damage a tank or smell propane, evacuate the area, remove any ignition sources and call 911 immediately.
