Tabernacle Choir director Mack Wilberg answers 7 Questions with Emmy

1 year ago 235

Every week I’m interviewing exciting people from Idaho and around the world!

Mack Wilberg has been the music director of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square since 2008. He is responsible for all musical and creative aspects of the Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square in rehearsals, concerts, tours, and recordings, as well as the weekly broadcast of ‘Music & the Spoken Word.’

He is a composer, arranger, guest conductor, and clinician throughout the United States and abroad. His compositions and arrangements, currently published exclusively by Oxford University Press, are performed and recorded by choral organizations throughout the world.

Mack agreed to chat with me in the historic Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. Here’s what I asked him:

How did you get your job as the conductor of the Tabernacle Choir? What is the best part about your job? Can you explain how someone gets into the choir and what responsibilities they have as a singer? In addition to conducting the choir, you also arrange and write music. Where do you get the ideas and how long does it take you? How did the Tabernacle Choir get started and how has it grown over the years? You probably have a lot of really cool moments as you conduct the choir. Can you share with me one or two special experiences? I’m from Idaho and we are known for our potatoes. Have you ever performed in Idaho and what is your favorite way to have a potato?

BONUS QUESTIONS

Who decides what music the choir performs at General Conference? What is your favorite song to conduct and do you have any future songs you’re working on? Can you share a piece of advice with me?
