Ryanair passengers pay £250 for bags being '1cm too big' – but crew's response stuns them

3 months ago 282

A Ryanair traveller was left stunned after being slapped with a £250 surcharge for his luggage, which was allegedly "one centimetre" too big.

Mirko E. who was set to jet off from Palma to Milan-Malpensa on 1 January with his family, faced the unexpected fee following a three-hour flight delay. The businessman, accustomed to flying with Ryanair and using the same bags, was confronted at the gate where his carry-ons were deemed slightly over the size limit by staff.

According to Diaria de Mallorca, despite the minimal excess, Mirko was told to cough up an additional £83 for each piece of luggage. After requesting to discuss the matter with a manager, he claims a crew member retorted: "Don't you think we are competent enough?"

As fellow passengers rallied behind Mirko and his family, the situation escalated, resulting in the airline staff declaring: "you will not fly today".

Despite support from other travellers, Mirko's family was ultimately not allowed to board, leaving them stranded. Reflecting on the incident, Mirko expressed his frustration, noting that they had never encountered such issues with their luggage on previous Ryanair flights.

The traveller recounted a tense situation at the airport, saying: "I then asked the young lady if I could take a photo of her name tag, so she took it off and then put it back on. We still had to fly and booked another Lufthansa flight, via Munich, for a total of around €1,000," reports the Express.

A Ryanair spokesperson clarified the incident, stating: "These passengers booked Priority Fare tickets for this flight from Palma de Mallorca to Milan Malpensa (01 Jan), which allowed each of them to carry a 10kg cabin bag and a small personal bag onboard."

The spokesperson continued:"As these passengers' cabin bags exceeded the permitted size, they were correctly required to pay a standard gate baggage fee however refused to do so and became aggressive towards gate staff."

They concluded with: "As a result of their aggressive behaviour, the gate agent denied these passengers boarding for this flight from Palma de Mallorca to Milan Malpensa."
