A further weather warning has been issued for Northern Ireland as the Met Office has stated travel disruption may be likely.

A yellow warning for ice affecting all areas of Northern Ireland will kick off the new week, coming into force at midnight tomorrow, Monday, January 6. The warning will be in place until 11am on the same day.

The new alert comes one day after the Met Office issued a warning for snow and ice, which remains in place until 6pm today, January 5, and could see up to 10cm of snow on higher ground.

As for what we can expect from the ice warning, the weather forecaster said: "Icy stretches developing during the early hours of Monday, bringing some disruption, especially to travel.

"Icy stretches are expected to develop across much of Northern Ireland during the early hours of Monday morning, following the clearance of earlier wet weather.

"In addition, further wintry showers are likely to move in from the north during this period, increasing the potential for ice in places, and bringing the chance of 1-3 cm of snow in a few places, mainly in the west."

National Highways Severe Weather Resilience Manager, Darren Clark, said: “If you are travelling, keep your distance and reduce your speed. Gritters will be out treating our roads around the clock when ice or snow is forecast, but it is still important to drive to the conditions.

“Even in conditions that seem normal and where the snow is not settling you could always experience slippery conditions. Drivers should plan their journeys, check their vehicles, monitor weather reports and pack a snow kit of blankets, food, water and a shovel.”
