IDAHO FALLS – The first snowstorm of the season is headed to eastern Idaho this week, and with it comes wind and colder temperatures.

The National Weather Service in Pocatello is forecasting temperatures in the mid 20s to upper 30s beginning Tuesday. Moisture in the form of rain and snow is expected to pass through the area Tuesday night.

“It will increase winds for several days with gusts ranging (from) 30 to 45 mph,” the NWS said Monday night. “Expect mountain snow with rain in the valleys during the day Wednesday. A cold front passing through Wednesday night brings snow levels crashing down.”

The initial storm will impact higher elevations on Tuesday, with a “light snow” hitting the rest of eastern Idaho on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Dan Valle, lead forecaster with the NWS, told us Monday up to a foot of snow is possible in the mountains with an inch or less throughout the Snake River Plain.

“This cold front will drop high temperatures by about 10 degrees from Wednesday to Thursday, with highs generally in the 30s and 40s Thursday and Friday,” the NWS says.

Weather predictions are subject to change as the week goes on. But as of Tuesday, the NWS is anticipating another “shot of cold air” for the weekend. By Sunday, afternoon highs are projected to be in the 30s with morning lows in the teens.
