Hopeful person

There was a time in which hope was not seen in my life. Hope was hidden because of negative expressions. Discouraging comments and evaluations seemed to take away hope in my heart, but I was not discouraged at all because I had faith. I was calm and peaceful. I was able to be grateful for what I am. Reflecting on the situation, I realized that hope comes from faith. Hope doesn’t come from me. Hope comes from faith.

Courageous people witness that hope comes from faith. As pilgrims of hope, we are going on our journey toward faith, truth, joy and eternal life. We are essentially hopeful human beings. We are called to be human beings of hope.

“Hoffnungsmensch” (Homo Sperans), written by Steffen Kern, German pastor, journalist and author, was published in 2023, and its Korean translation was recently published by Pauline in 2025. With inspiring episodes and stories of hope, it invites us to reflect on hope in our daily lives and to begin again.

Kern invites us to look at the world: Over 7 million people passed away due to the coronavirus. Over 80 million refugees were displaced around the world. So many cases of sexual abuse by priests, gender issues, forest fires, wars in several countries and serious political confrontations continue to disturb us. In line with these gloomy and dark situations, global climate change is progressing day by day as if to warn the end of the world. Various crises befall us day in and day out.

Facing all these struggling realities, some people keep asking such questions: Is heaven valid? Where is the Kingdom of Hope? Will heaven come to an end? Do we still have hope? Is God alive? Can the churches keep the promise of God? Can we begin again?

Despite all the uncertain situations, Kern firmly believes that world history is “not a history of downfall but a history of God and salvation. Therefore, it is a history of hope.”

Surely, hope comes from faith. Hope always inspires us to move forward and do something for a better future. Hope lets us expect something and leads us to go beyond the limitations. Hope motivates us and enlightens the power of life. Hope inspires us to trust in the providence of God and rely on the possibility of God.

With hope, we are willing to do something possible, hopeful and positive. A hopeful person is not self-centered, but he looks at others and listens to them. A hopeful person recognizes and accepts. A hopeful person sees the world with different eyes because he lives with a broad horizon.

“A hopeful person has both feet on the ground.

"He has a piece of heaven in his heart.

"He is on the ground and in heaven at the same time.”

All these inspiring stories of hope remind me of “L’Homme qui Marche 1” (life-size walking man) made in 1960 by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti (1901-66). Like this walking man, we are constantly walking with hope. Going beyond all the ups and downs, we walk in hope, with hope and for hope. We walk on and on with joy and gratitude.

“Affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us." (Romans 5:3-5)
