DUP MLA calls on nationalism to show 'clear leadership' after sinister anti-PSNI posters erected

1 month ago 190

A DUP MLA has called for nationalism and republicanism to show "clear leadership" by calling out posters which have called on people to "reject" what they term "British policing in Ireland". The posters which have been erected in the Holyland area of South Belfast and appeared on a number of social media platforms, bear the logo of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, a group linked to dissident republican activity.

The poster, which references the ongoing PSNI recruitment campaign, asks if applicants are "ready to make it as a career criminal" and lists a number of "job requirements" including "always look over your shoulder", "live in fear" and "high risk of injury".

Responding to the erection of the posters, DUP South Antrim MLA and Policing Board member Trevor Clarke described them as "sinister".

"I condemn this act. These menacing and sinister posters are unacceptable in a society that values the rule of law," he said.

"At a time when our police officers work tirelessly to protect all communities, attempts to intimidate or delegitimise them serve only to undermine public safety and create division.

"There must be clear leadership from within the nationalist and republican communities to call out this sinister act. Respect for the rule of law is a cornerstone of a democratic society.

"I am glad these posters have been removed and I call on the community to stand united against such displays."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "We are aware of a number of inappropriate and unacceptable posters in the Belfast area featuring our advertising material. These posters have clearly been created by those seek to thwart our recruitment campaign.

"We would urge anyone who comes across these posters, either online or physically, not to share or circulate this material further."
