The Garda Ombudsman Commission has confirmed that the investigation into a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a beloved GAA coach is still "open", nine months after the tragic event.
Niall MacEneaney, 42, was fatally struck by a private car on Rathmullan Road in Drogheda, Co Louth, in the early hours of St Patrick's Day, Sunday, March 17.
The vehicle involved is registered to an off-duty garda. In April, a member of An Garda Siochana was arrested and interviewed by GSOC in relation to the incident.
The officer under investigation has since been suspended. GSOC stated: "This investigation remains open. GSOC is not in a position to comment further at this time."
Previously, Irish Mirror revealed crucial evidence found at the scene - a registration plate from the suspected vehicle - which led investigators to the owner.
The publication also disclosed that CCTV footage tracking the suspect and vehicle will be key in the investigation. Niall, who led Termonfeckin club St Fechin's to two consecutive Louth senior hurling championship titles, was found unresponsive shortly after 2.40am on Rathmullan Road, reports the Irish Mirror.
Emergency services pronounced him dead upon their arrival. Known affectionately as "Trigger", Niall had married his wife Grace just a few years prior.
Mourners gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Drogheda to pay their respects were told that the deceased was "everybody's favourite" and had "friends in every county in Ireland". He was remembered as "a dedicated hurling man who loved dogs and making connections and was a devoted partner to his wife, Grace".
In the wake of the tragic incident, GSOC launched an investigation due to the potential involvement of a garda member and continues to call for witnesses. A statement from GSOC read: "GSOC would like to speak to any witnesses who observed any incident, activity or interactions at this time and location. GSOC would also welcome the provision of any CCTV, dashcam or mobile footage witnesses may have captured."
