A multi-day fishing trawler seized by the Sri Lanka Navy while transporting a consignment of suspected narcotics in seas south of Dondra has been brought to the Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour for further investigation.
The vessel was intercepted during a naval operation carried out yesterday (15) by the Sri Lanka Navy’s Offshore Patrol Squadron while it was allegedly transporting several sacks believed to contain illegal narcotics.
Following the interception, the Navy took the trawler into custody and began transporting it to shore. Authorities said the vessel has now been brought to the Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour, where investigations and inspections of the suspected contraband are expected to take place.
Five fishermen who were on board the trawler at the time of the operation were also taken into custody by naval personnel. The suspects are expected to be handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action.
Officials stated that further examinations will be conducted to determine the exact type and quantity of the suspected narcotics found on board the vessel. The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Sri Lanka Navy to curb illegal drug trafficking in the country’s territorial waters.
