The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to continue its sanitary napkin distribution programme for schoolgirls in 2026, reaffirming its commitment to supporting uninterrupted education and menstrual health.
The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 1.05 million students studying above Grade 6 in government and government-aided schools across the country.
Under the programme, each eligible student will receive vouchers worth Rs. 1,440 annually, which can be used to purchase sanitary napkins. The scheme is designed to ensure accessibility while allowing students to choose suitable products.
The proposal was approved by the Cabinet following submission by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, in her capacity as the Minister of Education.
Addressing Absenteeism and Health Barriers
The primary objective of the programme is to reduce school absenteeism among girls, particularly during menstruation, and to promote better menstrual hygiene management.
Officials note that lack of access to sanitary products has historically contributed to missed school days, affecting academic performance and long-term educational outcomes.
A Continuation of Social Support Policy
The continuation of the programme reflects the government’s broader focus on:
Educational equity
Public health improvement
Gender-sensitive policy implementation
By ensuring consistent access to menstrual hygiene products, the initiative aims to remove a critical barrier to education and empower young girls across Sri Lanka.
