Rs. 1 Million Fee Proposed for Special Vehicle Number Plates

Cabinet approval has been granted to present new regulations under the Motor Traffic Act to Parliament, introducing updated charges for obtaining special vehicle registration numbers.

Earlier provisions, published through an extraordinary gazette dated October 5, 2023, allowed vehicle owners to reserve special number plates up to 50,000 for all registered vehicles through the Department of Motor Traffic, subject to applicable fees.

Under the revised regulations, issued via Extraordinary Gazette No. 2470/14 dated January 5, 2026, the range of special numbers has been expanded. For all vehicles—excluding motorcycles, motor tricycles, and three-wheeler vans—special numbers from 50,000 up to 100,000 can now be reserved.

Importantly, the amendment introduces a fee of Rs. 1,000,000 for each such special number plate.

The proposal to formalize these legal provisions and present them to Parliament was submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and has now received Cabinet approval.
