(KTXL) — When it comes to the all-time matchup history between San Francisco and Detroit, the 49ers have a sizable advantage – but only two of those games happened in the playoffs.
Going into Sunday’s NFC Championship, the 49ers are 39-28-1 against the Lions. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The 49ers have won the previous 13 home matchups against the Lions. A 49ers win would give the franchise their eighth all-time Super Bowl appearance.
Detroit’s last road win against the 49ers was in 1975 and their last playoff victory as the visiting team was in 1957 against the same franchise. The Lions also look to break an 11-game road losing streak in the playoffs if they want to appear in their first Super Bowl in franchise history.
The 49ers home-game winning streak includes the only time they played the Lions during the Super Bowl era.
Here’s a look at the previous two postseason matchups between the two teams.
1983 NFC Divisional Round
On Dec. 31, 1983, the 49ers pulled off a 24-23 victory at Candlestick Park after taking the lead with 1:23 remaining.
The Lions had a chance to win the game, but kicker Eddie Murray missed a 43-yard field goal with five seconds left.
The game was far from pretty for both teams as they each committed multiple turnovers. The 49ers committed three turnovers and the Lions turned the ball over five times on interceptions by quarterback Gary Danielson.
The 49ers fell short of a Super Bowl appearance that season, losing 24-21 to Washington in the NFC Championship game.
1957 Western Conference Championship
The Lions’ last road playoff victory happened over a decade before the first Super Bowl.
On Dec. 22, 1957, the Lions defeated the 49ers 31-27 to advance to the 1957 NFL Championship Game.
After a 24-7 halftime lead for San Francisco, the Lions captured the victory after outscoring the 49ers 24-3 in the second half.
The Lions went on to win the 1957 NFL Championship after a 59-14 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
The 1957 championship remains the Lions’ last title.
