Sri Lanka’s Essential Services Commissioner General has outlined a plan to significantly reduce fuel consumption in the public sector, highlighting the potential to save up to 110 million litres of fuel annually through improved vehicle usage.
According to the guidelines issued, the government currently operates around 92,000 vehicles. If each vehicle reduces fuel consumption by at least one litre per day, the total daily saving would reach approximately 92,000 litres.
This would translate into monthly savings of about 9.2 million litres and an annual reduction of nearly 110 million litres of fuel.
Essential Services Commissioner General B.K. Prabath Chandra Keerthi emphasized that achieving this target requires coordinated efforts at the institutional level. He has instructed all government institutions to raise awareness among officials and drivers and to implement structured fuel-saving strategies.
The directive calls for the development of clear action plans within each institution to ensure efficient vehicle use and minimize unnecessary fuel consumption.
