Colombo, March 16 — The government has decided to grant weekly holidays on Wednesdays for public sector employees starting from Wednesday (17) in order to manage the ongoing fuel supply difficulties in the country.

The announcement was made by Commissioner General of Essential Services Prabath Chandrakeerthi during a special media briefing held at the Government Information Department.

He stated that the decision was taken after considering the current challenges in securing adequate fuel supplies and as a measure to reduce fuel consumption associated with commuting and government operations.

According to the Commissioner General, heads of state institutions have also been given the authority to determine how many employees should report to work during the remaining four working days of the week, depending on operational requirements.

Meanwhile, the government has also decided to temporarily suspend all state ceremonial events as part of the measures to manage the fuel shortage.

UPDATE: Wednesdays declared a holiday for:

• Government Offices
• Government Schools
• Universities
• Courts / Judicial Services

Also:

• All Government events suspended
• Private institutions requested to follow

Exempted:

• Customs

In addition, universities have been permitted to conduct lectures through Zoom or other online platforms where necessary, in order to minimize travel and fuel usage.

Authorities say these measures are intended to ease pressure on the country’s fuel supply system while maintaining essential public services.
