Glens ace Gyollai relishing 'special day' at Windsor Park

It will be a very special day for Daniel Gyollai on Sunday when he runs out at the National Stadium for the BetMcLean Cup final.

Not only will it be the big Hungarian's first final for Glentoran but he will be cheered on by some familiar faces in the crowd.

As well as his family, his partner and her parents, one of Gyollai's former youth coaches, who helped him make the decision to become a goalkeeper, will be there to support him in Belfast.

He said:

"I think I was 10-years-old when I was playing for my hometown team at a tournament in Budapest. At that stage, I was toying between being a goalkeeper and a striker. I was always a left-footer and they are always rarer to come by.

"András Helm came up to me and my family and asked me how old I was. He told me he liked the look of me, I move quite well and we know you like to come outside and play but we think you've got something special in goal.

"He took a picture of me, got my parents' details and told me he'd keep in touch. That was his way of going to his club at the time and saying he has someone with potential. There were talks about moving up to Budapest with two or three teams but it didn't materialise. Then I moved up to an academy where I then got the move to England at Stoke City.

"He was the first person to take notice of me in Hungary, so because of that we've had that long relationship spanning 15 years now. He's basically a family friend at this stage.

"He's been there throughout my career and he's been a great help, so I'm looking forward to him seeing a little bit of the fruits of his labour.

"I think there's about ten people coming over in total. My parents don't get to come over too many times as my mum is a teacher and my dad also works, so chances are limited.

"But for a Cup final we thought we have to get everyone over. My sister and her husband live near Galway, so they can drive up the road and be here for the weekend."

Hale credits manager to taking game to new level

Cliftonville captain Rory Hale (Image: INPHO/Presseye/Jonathan Porter)

Rory Hale has backed Jim Magilton to extend his stay at Cliftonville as he credits the former Northern Ireland captain for elevating his game to "a different level".

Sections of the Reds support had dubbed Hale the '60-minute Man' due to him not finishing games much to the consternation of the midfielder.

Since the arrival of Magilton and his backroom team at Solitude that has all turned around with Hale full of praise for the Cliftonville boss.

"It's been brilliant [since Magilton came in] and I think he's taken my game up to a different level in the last 18 months," said the Reds captain ahead of tomorrow's BetMcLean Cup final against Glentoran.

"Him, Gerard Lyttle and Ricky McCann got me from the 60 minute man that our own fans were calling me, which I didn't like, but it was true.

"They have transformed into playing 90 minutes every single game now. I'm loving it and playing some good football as well.

"Jim has put a new mentality into the group, we are doing well in the big games, but of course there have been inconsistencies this season in the league.

"We aren't throwing all our eggs in the one basket regarding the cup final. We want to win our next game and win as many as possible. If we win trophies along the way, then happy days."

Police have issued a traffic warning ahead of the BetMcLean Cup Final in South.

Road users have been advised by PSNI to anticipate some traffic disruption and plan for potential delays in South Belfast due to the football match. Supporters are advised to allow sufficient travel time for their journey, both before and after the match.

Traffic congestion is likely in the area due to the expected volume of people attending the fixture. Supporters have also been asked, if driving to the match, they park with consideration for local residents and businesses in the wider Donegall Avenue area.

A build-up of traffic will be expected in the area in the vicinity of the stadium both before and after the game. A spokesperson for the PSNI added:

"Please be respectful and considerate whilst walking through residential streets convenient to the stadium.

"The areas around the National Stadium are ‘No Street Drinking’ zones under Belfast City Council by-laws."
