The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to implement Sri Lanka’s National Civil Aviation Master Plan, aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation sector through a structured and strategic framework.
The initiative aligns with recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), established in 1944, which guides member states in developing aviation systems that ensure safety, security, efficiency, capacity, and environmental sustainability.
ICAO has emphasized that a comprehensive and well-planned national approach is essential for maintaining an effective aviation sector. As part of this, it recommends the formulation of a Civil Aviation Master Plan as a key tool for long-term development.
In the context of the global recovery of the aviation industry following the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for strategic planning has become increasingly important. ICAO has highlighted the necessity for countries to adopt forward-looking development frameworks to support the restoration and growth of air transport systems.
Accordingly, the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, with the participation of all relevant stakeholders, has prepared the National Civil Aviation Master Plan in line with ICAO guidelines.
The proposal to implement the plan, submitted by the Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, has now been approved by the Cabinet, paving the way for a more coordinated and sustainable development of Sri Lanka’s aviation sector.
