Woman accused of setting fire to own flat and endangering neighbours lives granted bail

A woman facing trial on a charge of arson which endangered the lives of her neighbours was granted bail on Friday.

Neisha Devlin, from Cadiz Manor in the Minorca Drive area of Carrickfergus, appeared at Belfast Crown Court where she was charged with two offences.

The 34-year old was charged that on September 14 last year, she damaged by fire her flat at Cadiz Manor intending to damage such property or being reckless as to whether the lives of other residents in the apartment block would be endangered.

When asked how she pleaded to the arson charge, Devlin replied "not guilty."

She was also charged with possessing the Class A drug cocaine on the same date and admitted this offence.

After his client was arraigned, a defence barrister told Judge Sandra Crawford that whilst there was "no dispute" on the factual background to the arson, the issue was Devlin's "state of mind at the time that she lit the rag that led to the fire."

Both the Crown and defence agreed that a trial would last between two and three days and Judge Crawford set a date for the hearing as June 18.

Devlin's barrister then made an application for bail, which was not opposed by the Crown.

A series of conditions were imposed which included Devlin being bailed to an approved address in Portadown and a ban on her consuming any drugs.

Due to a lack of objections, Judge Crawford granted the application for bail and said she would review the case on April 11.
