Winter's icy chokehold on Britain: Commuters face more travel chaos on roads and rail

The UK faces another day of ice and snow across the country as temperatures remain well below freezing across the country today, with even more traffic disruption expected on road and rail this morning.

Commuters face another day of travel chaos amid ice on the roads and heavy snowfall in places.  

Police have warned drivers to take care on the roads amid the difficult conditions, adding that there were 'a lot of accidents' this morning.

Temperatures plummeted to as low as -5C and -6C in parts of the country last night, with many places waking up to more frost and ice this morning. 

There have already been numerous reports of disruption to railways today as temperatures remain below freezing in many regions.  

Yesterday saw a series of series road traffic accidents and road closures, including a bus carrying around 80 people being overturned in a collision in Somerset.

The weather today is not quite as cold as it was yesterday, the chilliest day of the year so far with the lowest recorded temperature -9.8C in Topcliffe in north Yorkshire.

The Met Office has issued a number of yellow and amber weather warnings this week as the UK is hit by the freezing weather, causing travel disruption in much of the country.

Yellow warnings are in place in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the north-west and south of England.  

It warned commuters to leave 'extra time for any journeys that you have planned' as many see a 'frosty start' to the day. 

Surrey Police said on its Twitter account: 'This is snow joke, baby it's cold out there.

'Please take care on the roads, the gritters are out and about but we are dealing with a lot of accidents at the moment.'
