The latest comedy series from the creative mind of Chris O'Dowd has landed, leaving some viewers questioning if the show's setting is a real location.
Viewers will witness chaos unfold across the six episodes of Small Town, Big Story, as a Hollywood film crew descends on a quiet Irish village named Drumban. However, the spotlight soon reveals a hidden secret that's been hushed up for 25 years among the locals. O'Dowd, famed for roles in sitcoms like The IT Crowd and films such as Bridesmaids and Thor: The Dark World, is the creator of the show.
He also serves as the writer and director, and stars in the cast himself. He'll be seen alongside big names like Paddy Considine and Christina Hendricks. But where exactly is Small Town, Big Story filmed? Why was this location chosen? And does Drumban actually exist? Here's all you need to know.
Where was Small Town, Big Story filmed?
The show was shot near where O'Dowd's mum still resides in the countryside of west Ireland, in Boyle and its surrounding areas, reports Dublin Live. Boyle Today confirmed that filming took place around the King Harman Monument (Town Clock) in Boyle town in September 2023. However, scenes were also captured in Wicklow, south of Dublin.
O'Dowd told Variety that this was because many of the production's crew lived there.
Is Drumban a real place in Ireland?
Regrettably, Drumban is not a real location. The series creator, O'Dowd, decided to set the show in a fictional rural Irish village, despite drawing heavy inspiration from his hometown.
He hasn't specifically discussed why he opted for a fictitious setting or the inspiration behind the name, but it could be because the series isn't intended to mock the actual residents of Boyle. The show is, however, based on his experiences filming in a small town.
He shared: "When I was thinking about a place to set the show, I wanted somewhere small that was more like a village. I imagined my mother's home, which is 10 miles or so outside Boyle. I'd shot Moone Boy in Boyle and I always wanted to go back."
He further added: "What I found funny, while filming Moone Boy, was people from the town and passers-by walking around in their best clothes or with more make-up on, just in case they were caught on camera."
Where is Small Town, Big Story available to stream?
It will be broadcasted on Sky in the UK and Ireland, airing weekly starting February 27 on Sky Atlantic at 9pm. But if you're too eager to wait, all episodes will be made available for binge-watching from the same date.
