VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The Volusia County sheriff on Monday will address recent acts of antisemitism in the county and in Central Florida at a news conference.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood will be joined by faith and community leaders for the news conference, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
News 6 spoke with Chitwood last week about the issue.
“I don’t care what faith you are, what religion you are, what color you are, we need to navigate this together and send a clear message: This isn’t going to be tolerated,” he said.
A hate group used a portable projector to display antisemitic messages on the side of the Daytona International Speedway until deputies managed to block the projection.
The same group believed to be responsible for the offensive projection at the speedway also held up antisemitic signs on a pedestrian overpass.
Antisemitic propaganda was also handed out in Ormond Beach.

Chitwood said there were other reported incidents of hateful speech in the city of Port Orange.
“These people are not part of our community,” Chitwood said. “These people want nothing to do with watching our community grow and support one another. It’s all about destroying something and hating something.”
This comes as proposed legislation would make it illegal to project hateful images on to a building without permission and outlaw the distribution of antisemitic flyers.
