Numerous homeowners are only now realising they need to empty a 'hidden' compartment in their washing machine every two to four weeks. This helps the appliance 'keep everything fresh' and avoids the risk of mould and mildew.
Although it may be a common occurrence for some to incorporate this chore into their cleaning routine already, others aren't aware they even have to do it. It comes as a recent Instagram video reminded thousands of how important it is to empty your washing machine's water reservoir, reports the Express.
Lifestyle blogger and mum Chrissy, who goes by the username The.peaceful.sleeper on the social media platform, uploaded a video of her emptying her washing machine's water reservoir. The compartment is hidden behind a door, usually located in the bottom left or right hand corner of your washing machine - but all machines are different.
She filmed herself opening up the compartment, taking out a black small hose and letting the water inside it drain into a cup. In the caption she said: "Your friendly reminder to empty the water reservoir in your washer!"
She continued: You're supposed to do it every 2-4 weeks... but when was the last time you actually did? It takes 30 seconds and keeps everything fresh! Send this to your bestie and your partner so they can't say they 'didn't know'."
In the comment section, one viewer called Sam admitted: "Well it's been 10 years and now I'm afraid to do it." Robyn replied: "Ha! Same! Didn't even know that was a thing." A third said: "Ur not alone." Another shared: "Not me going to the comments to make sure I'm not the only one."
However, many people who regularly empty their machine's watch reservoir urged others to take precautions when doing so. Emma commented: "Like others have said, just be prepared! Have a big (flat) basin that you can fit under to catch all of the water if possible. Lots and lots of towels are needed. I had family almost flood their home from doing this for the first time after years had passed."
Why you should empty your washing machine's water reservoir:
It's important to drain the water reservoir in your washing machine to avoid mould, unpleasant smells, and possible damage caused by stagnant water. This is especially crucial if you're storing the machine for an extended time or if you think there might be a blockage in the drain hose. Keeping the water flowing helps ensure your machine stays functional and hygienic.
Key reasons to empty the water reservoir:
Stagnant water in your washing machine can foster mould and bacteria, resulting in bad odours. Keeping water in the drum for too long may lead to rust or harm to the internal parts. If you find water left in the drum after a wash cycle, it might suggest a blocked drain hose or a malfunctioning pump, which needs to be checked. When you plan to store a washing machine for an extended period, it's essential to drain all the water to avoid mould development and possible damage while moving it.How to empty your washing machine's water reservoir:
To drain the water reservoir in your washing machine, first find the drain hose, which is typically located at the bottom front of the machine. Disconnect it from its connection and place it into a bucket or drain to let the water flow out. Additionally, you might need to unscrew the cap to access the drain pump filter for complete drainage.
Key steps:
Turn off the washing machine: Unplug it from the power source. Position a container: Place a bucket or shallow tray under the drain hose to catch the water. Access the drain hose: Find the drain hose at the bottom of the machine and disconnect it from its connection. Drain the water: Allow the water to flow into the container. Check for filter access: Some machines might require accessing the drain pump filter by unscrewing a cap to drain the water completely. Reconnect the hose: Securely reattach the drain hose once all the water has drained. Many of these techniques can fix most drainage problems, but there are times when you might need to seek professional assistance.
Key points about a washing machine's water system:
Water inlet: The water enters the machine through a hose connected to the water supply, usually located at the back or bottom of the washer. Washing drum: This is where the water is held during the wash cycle. Drain hose: Water is drained from the drum through a drain hose that connects to your home's plumbing system.Important points to remember:
Each washing machine is different, so always consult your washing machine manual for specific water-draining instructions. If you are unsure, contact a local plumber for advice or help.
Before you start draining your washing machine, unplug the machine from the power source and turn off the water supply. It would also be wise to gather tools like a bucket, towels, and pliers.
Protect your floor by placing a towel or mat under the drain hose to prevent water from spilling. Be careful with the filter when accessing the drain pump filter. Handle it carefully to avoid spilling water. For more information about draining a washing machine, Hoover has a page full of handy information.
