The United States is in contact with the South Korean government and monitoring the situation "closely," the White House said Tuesday after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law, accusing the opposition of "anti-state" activities.
"The administration is in contact with the ROK government and is monitoring the situation closely," a spokesperson of the National Security Council told Yonhap News Agency via email. ROK stands for South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea.
The martial law declaration came after the opposition Democratic Party railroaded a downsized budget bill in the parliamentary budget committee, and submitted impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor. (Yonhap)
