The suspect was hospitalized with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Police in Fairfax County shot and wounded a man while attempting to arrest him Tuesday night.
The incident happened near the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and Patrick Henry Drive around 11:30 p.m.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis provided details about the preliminary investigation into the shooting late Tuesday.
According to Davis, undercover Fairfax County narcotics detectives were in the area conducting a drug investigation. Those detectives identified the people allegedly involved in the illegal distribution of narcotics and developed probable cause to arrest those suspects.
Davis said those suspect were in a car at the time, and during the attempted arrest the car took off and jumped a couple of curbs and drove recklessly before officers were able to block the car in.
"One of our Fairfax County undercover detectives discharged his firearm during the apprehension effort to take these persons into custody," Davis said.
Davis said the man shot is being treated for his gunshot wound at a local hospital and is expected to survive. His condition is not known at this time. Davis did not say how many people were arrested.
Further details about the shooting were not immediately released by Davis, who said the investigation is active and ongoing. It is not clear how many shots were fired or if any of the other suspects involved were injured.
Fairfax County Police did say in a tweet that no officers were injured in the incident.
Davis promised to provide additional details in the days ahead as they become available.
This is the third shooting involving Fairfax County Police officers since June 30.
That's when Fairfax Police shot and killed 37-year-old Christian Parker of Reston in the parking lot of a Target store in Springfield, Virginia.
Parker was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon, larceny of a firearm, brandishing a firearm and discharging a firearm within a home.
According to a tweet from Fairfax County Police, the shooting happened when officers tried to stop a "wanted man." Parker was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries, according to officers.
Days later, on July 7, a Fairfax County officer shot and killed a man outside a McLean home. Officers were called to a home just after 7 p.m. in the 6900 block of Arbor Lane for a report of a man throwing objects outside the house.
According to the Chief Davis, three officers entered the foyer of the home. The department said the man threw something at the officers and then charged at them. A struggle ensued between the man and the officers, according to the chief, at which point two officers discharged their taser-like electronic control weapons, while the third shot the man several times.
In a separate incident on July 10, Fairfax Police officers were seen on body camera video pointing guns at a teen suspect who was video taping them.
Davis said those officers were justified in pulling their guns on the teen, saying video that went viral online lacks context.
The police chief said the teen was one of three suspects who were reported by a 9-1-1 caller to have threatened her with a gun while she worked inside a Falls Church IHOP.
Davis explained that officers responded after the emotional IHOP employee called for help. The caller described that suspects to officials and also informed them that the suspects brandished a gun as a threat.
"He was not a passerby," Davis said.
"9-1-1 gun calls are very serious calls for service," Davis added. "Our police officers acted according to the law, according to our policies and consistent with community expectations."
