Two Met Office weather warnings for Sunday complicate Storm Eowyn recovery work in NI

Two separate weather warnings from the UK Met Office are in force in Northern Ireland on Sunday.

A snow and ice alert, coded yellow under the Met Office's coloured warning system, has been in place since 6pm on Saturday and will remain in force until 10am. A second yellow alert, the least severe of the three colours used by the forecaster in its warning system, will come into effect as soon as the snow-and-ice warning expires at 10am and last until 7pm.

This comes after the first red alert ever issued by the Met Office for Northern Ireland on Friday, when Storm Eowyn brought widespread destruction.

The yellow warning for snow and ice means "some roads and railways" are "likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services", according to the Met Office.

The forecaster also warns that there will be "probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths", and "some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces".

Snow, sleet and rain showers are expected to die away during Sunday morning, until the warning expires at 10am.

As that alert expires, the yellow warning for wind takes effect immediately.

The forecasters say "some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely". It's also "likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves", the Met Office say.

Bus and train services could also be affected, with some journeys taking longer.

And as Northern Ireland continues to battle to repair the damage wrought on the electricity network by Storm Eowyn, the Met Office say "some short term loss of power and other services is possible" during the yellow wind warning on Sunday. The forecasters also predict "likely" delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

The yellow wind warning is set to expire at 7pm. Both warnings cover Northern Ireland in its entirety.

On the yellow alert for wind, the Met Office warns: "Winds will increase through Sunday morning, with a spell of strong to gale force east to southeasterly winds likely. Many areas will see gusts 40-50 mph, with coasts and hills perhaps seeing occasional gusts to 60 mph. Given ongoing recovery work after Storm Éowyn, impacts may be more widespread than would ordinarily be expected with winds of this strength. Winds will slowly moderate from the south Sunday evening."
