Two men have been arrested and more than €2 million worth of herbal cannabis seized in Co Donegal following a joint operation between Irish police and customs.

As part of an intelligence-led operation, Revenue officers seized approximately 112kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €2.2 million in Lifford, a town near the border with Co Tyrone, on Tuesday.

The huge drugs bust was made as a result of a joint operation conducted by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and Donegal Divisional Drugs Unit and Revenue’s Custom Service. During the course of the major operation, Gardaí arrested two men, both aged in their 30s.

The men are currently being detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at a Garda Station in the North West Region. A Garda spokesperson said that investigations are ongoing.

A Revenue spokesperson said: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing joint investigations involving organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.

"If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding drug smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on phone number 1800 295 295."

This seizure forms part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in July 2021.

The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels—international, national, and local—involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale, and supply of controlled drugs.
