Heartfelt tributes have been flooding in for the sports-loving teen, Freya Fitzpatrick O'Doherty, who tragically lost her life following a valiant struggle with cancer.
Diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour back in April 2018, Freya defied every challenge to continue engaging in the sports she loved throughout her journey.
A cherished figure at Templeogue Synge Street where she played Gaelic football, Freya also took to the pitch for Larkview FC and Kilnamanagh AFC in soccer.
In spite of her challenging health condition, she managed to raise significant funds for charity and had the opportunity to meet many sporting legends, including players from the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland soccer teams and the Dublin GAA squad, reports the Irish Mirror.
Her father Aidan shared the heart-wrenching news of her passing on Friday, saying: "The day we long feared we had to face has finally arrived. Our beloved Freya has passed on from this world. And our hearts are broken."
He continued: "After seven years, Freya's long fight against her cancer has come to an end. She died at home, with no pain or discomfort, surrounded by her family and with all the love she deserved to receive, including from her beloved dogs Pepper and Pedro."
Concluding his message, he reflected: "In the end, it happened so quickly that it still seems unreal despite the fact we have been prepared for this. But in the end, we were unprepared. We still feel her all around.
"We cannot express enough our gratitude to Our Lady's Hospice in Harold's Cross, they have helped us navigate this impossible journey and guided us so well, making sure Freya's journey has been as peaceful and free from as much pain as possible. They have provided so much solace, allowing her to spend her last few days at home, after a tough few weeks in the hospice.
"Her siblings, Lauren and Conleth, and her mum and dad, Emma and Aidan, were there for her when she passed on, to let her know that she was and will always be loved beyond belief.
"That she touched so many people's lives and that her grit, resilience and pure stubbornness not to give in was something to behold and has provided so much inspiration.
"A true force of nature, Freya's incredible braveness will not be forgotten.
"We just wish to thank everyone who has been with us right throughout this. All your support has been incredible and shows that compassion is a human trait that is indomitable.
"There are so many people to thank, a whole legion, and our gratitude for all your kindness will never be enough. Simon, Niamh, all the Fitzpatrick clan, all our friends and neighbours, Ciara, Andrew, Arlene.
"Templeogue Synge Street, the club that championed her. All her coaches, Matt O'Dell, Damien Peelo, and all her teammates. She was never forgotten and always included.
"To her medical team all through the years, in Crumlin's Children's Hospital, St Luke's (Rathgar and Beaumont), Beaumont and St James's, their care could not be faulted. In fact, they went above and beyond in our view.
"Freya lived life to the fullest in the toughest of circumstances. She will live on forever with us. Her memory will not fade. Freya, you are loved and always be."
Templeogue Synge Street GAA expressed their sorrow on Friday: "Our hearts are breaking today . With sadness we report that Freya has passed away this morning following her long battle. TSS to the core.
"We have lost a great. Our heartfelt condolences to Emma, Aidan, Con and Lauren . Truly devastating."
Kilnamanagh AFC shared their grief, stating: "It is with deepest regret and a heavy heart that we inform you of the untimely passing of our wonderful team mate Freya. Freya passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by her loved ones. Our hearts go out to all her family and friends. We at Kilnamanagh will remember Freya and her brilliant approach to life."
The Dublin GAA team paid a visit to Freya in Crumlin Children's Hospital after their All-Ireland victory in 2018, and former Dubs star Michael Darragh MacAuley honoured her memory on social media.
MacAuley expressed his sorrow, stating: "So sad hearing about Freya's passing. She battled through so much to get back to playing her sports that she loved. Rest well."
In honour of Freya, a minute's silence will be observed across all DDSL club matches this weekend.
