Total number of workplace deaths in NI revealed as employers pay £1.2 million in fines

1 year ago 572

Employers found guilty of health and safety breaches following a workplace death have paid a total of £1.2 million in fines over the past ten years in Northern Ireland, new figures released at Stormont show.

There have been 139 workplace fatalities in Northern Ireland since 2014, with employers having been found guilty of health and safety breaches in 33 cases involving a workplace death.

The two largest individual fines were both imposed in 2019/20 financial year, with a £150,000 in each case.

The figures were released by Economy Minister Conor Murphy, following a written query from the DUP MLA Michelle McIlveen.

The Strangford MLA had requested the "number of workplace deaths as a result of work-related accidents; the number of employers found guilty of health and safety breaches as a result of investigations by the Health and Safety Executive into such deaths; and (iii) the financial fines that were imposed in each case, in each of the last ten years."

The Minister responded with a table outlining the figures, which was published on the NI Assembly website earlier this week.

The figures are as follows:
