As the Easter holidays approach, many holidaymakers seeking a thrilling alternative to the traditional European destinations are being encouraged to consider Zanzibar - an affordable and stunning island destination off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa.
While Spain and Portugal continue to draw crowds, Zanzibar is rapidly gaining recognition as a tropical haven that doesn't break the bank.
In recent times, Zanzibar has earned a reputation for being one of the best value sunny destinations, with affordable meals, drinks and accommodation all available in abundance. A pint of beer in Zanzibar can cost as little as €1.22, and visitors can enjoy a meal at a cheap restaurant from just €4.50.
The island also offers a range of affordable accommodation, including double rooms from €6 per night. Among the options on booking.com is a budget double room on a private beach suitable for two adults for just €91 for a week in April - that's a tiny €6.40 each per night. Alternatively, two adults can stay all inclusive at the four-star Paradise Beach Resort and Spa for a week for just €545 - that's just €38 each per night, reports the Irish Mirror.
Meanwhile, TUI has recently expanded its portfolio with new hotel openings, as reported by The Sun. TUI is offering 20 all-inclusive holidays to Zanzibar, with prices starting from £1,242 per person and going up to £2,509 per person.
The latest addition to their collection is The Mora Zanzibar, which opened in spring 2024 and is located on the north-east coast of Zanzibar's main island, Unguja.
Zanzibar was recently named by BestGamblingSites.com as one of the best-value sunny destinations in the world, beating the likes of Ibiza for sunshine and affordability. A spokesperson said: "Tanzania receives an average of 12.06 hours of sunshine per day during the winter, 33% more than Ibiza. During the winter months visitors to Tanzania can gain 8.53 hours of sunshine per day, the most sunshine gained of all locations analysed - making it the best-value sunny destination."
Luxury tour operator Scott Dunn also highlighted Zanzibar as one of its "up-and-coming" destinations for 2024, with an 83% rise in bookings among its affluent clientele. But the island is not just for the wealthy - it has earned the nickname "the new Magaluf" for its party-friendly atmosphere, affordable prices and lively beach clubs.
For those seeking a blend of lively nightlife and tranquil beach days, Zanzibar is the perfect destination. The island boasts a plethora of beach bars, clubs, and eateries.
Besides its affordability, Zanzibar is renowned for its year-round sunshine, with average temperatures hitting 30C in April, making it an ideal pre-summer beach getaway.
Visitors can also discover the breathtaking Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve, famed for its clear waters, white sands and snorkelling spots.
Zanzibar City, the island's capital, is divided into two parts - the historical Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the modern Ng'ambo. Stone Town is famous for its rich cultural history and architectural charm, influenced by Arab, Persian, Indian and European cultures. Ng'ambo, on the other hand, is the more commercial area, with bustling markets, shops and offices.
While flights to Zanzibar from Ireland may be more expensive, with return prices in April starting around €318 per person from Dublin, the cost of living once you arrive makes it an affordable option for those on a budget. And with its welcoming locals and lively atmosphere, Zanzibar is quickly becoming a go-to destination for those looking to switch up their usual holiday routine.
