In another blow to downtown San Francisco, home organization retailer the Container Store could relocate as soon as next year.

The San Francisco Business Times spotted a planning application from the store, signaling an intent to give up its 29 4th Street location near Market Street, which spans two floors, and reestablish at 555 9th Street in the former Nordstrom Rack space. This would downgrade the shop's footprint from 30,000 square feet to 22,389 square feet.

The Container Store did not respond to a request for comment as of publication.

The move hinges on obtaining a conditional use permit for formula retail use, which the Business Times points out can take upward of a year for planning approval. There is no closure date for the 4th Street location.

The Union Square area of downtown has been struggling with an increase in crime in recent years, coupled with losing several big retailers since 2020, including Crate & Barrel, DSW and Gap.

The shopping center on 9th Street also includes a Bed, Bath & Beyond, a chain that has closed several Bay Area locations in the past year, and a Trader Joe's.

The Bay Area has four other Container Store locations: Corte Madera, Walnut Creek, Palo Alto and San Jose.
