Heavily-armed cops have stormed a Brisbane home after a routine welfare check turned into an hours-long siege.

Queensland Police made an emergency declaration just after 1pm on Friday after attending a home on Bradman St in Sunnybank Hills.

Negotiators rushed to the scene following reports a man and a woman were holed up inside the property.

Police allege a 25-year-old man armed with a knife kept a woman, 26, captive for four hours.

Officers spoke to the pair before specialist police stormed the home around 2.30pm local time.

The emergency declaration was revoked by police when the man was taken into custody.

He is currently being treated with non-life threatening injuries to the leg and is assisting police with their investigations into the incident.

The 26-year-old woman has been transported to hospital suffering from shock.

Police had been sent to the home on Thursday following an alert from a member from the public that a woman had been allegedly assaulted by a man in a car, Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham told the Courier Mail.

When police arrived at the property neither the man nor woman could be found, he said.

Police returned at 11am on Friday to conduct a welfare check and upon gaining entry to the home found a 25-year-old man armed with a knife, as well as a 26-year-old woman.

Queensland police negotiators attempted to communicate with the two inside the home, before specialist police broke into the bathroom following safety concerns for the woman

'Upon observing police inside the residence, he has taken hold of the female and dragged her into a nearby bathroom where he has secured the door,' Det Supt Massingham said.

'At that time, he was threatening harm to the female.'

After leaving the property, police negotiators attempted to communicate with the pair inside.

'Specialist police were deployed to the street,' he said.

'Approximately 1.45pm we had some success where the male and female were communicating with us through the locked door.'

'Unfortunately, at around 2.25pm those conversations broke down and we had significant concerns for that female.'

An emergency declaration was announced just after 1pm on Friday with Bradman Street (pictured) closed to traffic and pedestrians, people in the surrounding area urged to stay indoors

Specialist police forced their way into the bathroom at this time where the man and woman were locked inside, Det Supt Massingham said.

'Very shortly thereafter, the male was taken into custody lying in bathtub in the bathroom,' he said.

'He has suffered some injuries to the leg as a result of police forcing entry to that area but I'm happy to report that the 26-year-old female is out and is safe.'

All roads between Bellrick and Peterkin Streets in the Sunnybank Hills area were closed off to traffic and pedestrians.

The house's owner, Theresa Avison, who sublets a room in the house, told the Courier Mail she was concerned for the people inside.

'There's no word to describe my feeling', she said.

'I hope no-one is hurt. No one can understand this stress.'

Criminal charges are expected to be laid against the man.
