Spain holiday warning for tourists as Storm Konrad set to bring severe weather

Tourists heading to Spain this week may want to swap their sunglasses for umbrellas as the country is being hit by a bout of stormy weather.

While Spain is typically known for its sunny climate, weather warnings have been issued for much of the country, raising alarm for holidaymakers - particularly those visiting some popular destinations.

Storm Konrad, named by the Portuguese meteorological service, is already causing chaos. Much of the southern coast of Spain is under Status Yellow warnings this evening, with forecasts predicting torrential rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and high waves. There's a possibility of 15mm of rain falling within one hour, alongside wind gusts reaching 70km/h and waves of 2-3 metres, the Irish Mirror reports.

Spain's weather service AEMET warned: "A new low pressure system will move over the Iberian Peninsula, leaving skies very cloudy to overcast with widespread rainfall. Scattered thunderstorms and small hail are possible, accompanying the showers. Maximum temperatures will drop across the Iberian Peninsula. Strong gusts are expected."

The Canary Islands are also affected, with Status Yellow warnings in place for wave heights ranging between 4 and 5 meters.

AMET explained: "In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, cloudy periods with a low probability of light, scattered showers during the early morning and late afternoon. On the other islands, cloudy periods with scattered showers will occur during the second half of the day, especially in western La Palma and northern Tenerife, and are likely in eastern Gran Canaria.

"Minimum temperatures generally show little change, and maximum temperatures will drop slightly, more pronounced in mid-mountain areas and peaks. In the central peaks of Tenerife, the wind will be strong with very strong gusts, with occasional gusts not ruled out on exposed peaks in the other western islands, as well as locally on Lanzarote in the afternoon."

The storm is expected to affect much of Spain throughout the week, with Thursday and Friday likely to be the most severe days.

Tourists are advised to keep an eye on local forecasts and take necessary precautions, especially in southwestern and central Spain, where the combination of rain and strong winds may affect travel plans and outdoor activities.
