IDAHO FALLS – The boys competition at the Tiger-Grizz Invitational on Saturday featured two area wrestlers looking to keep their perfect seasons intact.

Mission accomplished.

South Fremont freshman Greysen Packer and American Falls junior Nathan Gugelman II each won titles with impressive wins in their 113 and 150 finals, respectively.

It was the first Tiger-Grizz meet for both.

“The goal was always to win state and go undefeated freshman year,” said Packer, who improved to 37-0 with a workman-like 5-2 decision over Mountain Home’s Camden Kuntz. Packer had a 3-1 lead after one round.

“I wouldn’t say I expected it,” Packer said of his fast start to the season. “I know all the offseason work and having the best partners in the state really helps. I knew going into the season I’d be doing really well.”

While Packer was in control of his match from the start, Gugelman trailed Westlake’s Josh Fish early in a physical bout.

He actually trailed until the closing seconds before he managed a takedown to take the lead with one second left and earn a 5-4 win.

Gugelman, who improved to 33-0, said he trusts his conditioning, even if the match comes down to the final seconds.

“I always want to get better,” he said. “Lately it’s been believing in myself and trust my offense.”

Post Falls topped the team standings with 208 points followed by Corner Canyon and Meridian.

Six other area wrestlers advanced to Saturday’s finals, but came up just short.

Madison’s Brand’n Edstrom was second at 106, while Idaho Falls’ state champion Saxton Scott battled Meridian’s Blake Nevils into the third round, but it was Nevils with a reversal in the closing seconds for an 8-7 win.
Snake River’s Jace Leavitt (132), Madison’s Ace Ingram (144), American Falls’ Fabian Avalos (165), and Rex Salas (285) each advanced to their respective finals.
