SODA SPRINGS – Community members who visit their local library this weekend will find it converted into a literary-themed miniature golf course.
The Soda Springs Library is holding its first-ever “Mini Golf at the Library” on Saturday starting at noon. Patrons will find the library filled with different putting greens, each based around a work of literature and designed by a different organization.
“It will be super fun for families, because all of the golf holes are going to be based on different storybook characters or scenes,” said Children’s Librarian Dorajo Messerly. “It’s going to be able to showcase a different side of the library, that we can use it for a lot of different events, and it will be nice for the community to be able to gather here.”
The event, which is sponsored by Ireland Bank, will host nine different holes. Beth Cheirrett, president of the Friends of the Soda Springs Library, said that the volunteers at the nonprofit initially considered making the holes themselves, they decided instead to find designers and give them freedom in their design.
“We just thought, ‘Why don’t we give others opportunity to be involved?’ And then that will probably make a better game, more diverse holes, different skill levels and different ideas,” Cheirrett said.
Each designer chose a book on their own.
Hole 1 was designed by Ireland Bank and based on “Charlotte’s Web” Hole 2 was designed by the Rocky Mountain Tolkien Society and based on Lord of the Rings Hole 3 was designed by Alan & Cindy Erickson and based on “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” Hole 4 was based on NPI Home Inspections, Fullmer Family, and based on “Alice in Wonderland” Hole 5 was designed by the Rotary Club of Soda Springs and based on Dr. Suess Hole 6 was designed by the Dr. Preston Christensen Family and based on Curious George Hole 7 was designed by the Soda Springs Police Department and based on “Richard Scarry’s Busy Town” Hole 8 was designed by the Idaho Department of Fish & Game and based on “Wild About Reading” Hole 9 was designed by Full Draw Archery, Vedder Family and based on Pippi LongstockingWhile there will be no official tournament, groups of players are welcome to keep score among each other.

Messerly said the library hopes to make this event a yearly one, and she’s excited to see the community come together for it.
“We could not ask for a better community. We could not ask for better participation, programs or more support for our library. People come out time and time again to support our library through the various activities that we do here,” Messerly said.
