A rescue helicopter had to be called in earlier today after a walker in the Mournes found himself in an “exceptionally dangerous position”.

The man slipped while on Slieve Lamagan and ended up in “quite a precarious location”, sparking a rescue operation involving the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team.

In a post on their Facebook page, the volunteers said: “At 1048hrs this morning the team received a request for assistance via Police for a walker that had become crag fast. The walker had been descending from the summit of Slieve Lamagan when he took the wrong line and subsequently slipped quite a distance. Fortunately he was able to stop himself though by which stage he was in an exceptionally dangerous position and unable to move.

“Given the circumstances, the team responded alongside requesting the assistance of a SAR Helicopter with R116 responding from Dublin. When on scene, thankfully R116 was able to access the casualty and airlift them from what was quite a precarious location. Once returned to team members at the bottom, the casualty was walked to safety. A total of 12 team members responded and stood down at 1430hrs.

“A note of thanks to ARCC (Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre) and to R116 for a fantastic effort today which both promptly rescued the casualty and saved us hours of hard labour!”
