The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn MP, has offered his support to the annual Black Santa appeal which helps raise funds for local charities.
On a visit to St Anne's Cathedral, Hilary Benn took the time to meet with Dean of Belfast Cathedral, Dean Stephen Forde, Father Martin Magill and Canon Tracy Mc Roberts MBE to learn more about the appeal.
The 'Black Santa' tradition at Belfast Cathedral has taken place every year since 1976 when it was started by Dean Sammy Crooks.
This Christmas, the collection will support local charities helping families with children with autism, and those supporting young adults at risk of homelessness.
The Secretary of State said: “This is a great tradition which helps the most vulnerable in our communities. I was delighted to put on the cloak and help with the annual appeal. The generosity of passers-by - including a group of Belgian football fans - was heart warming and greatly appreciated by the clergy.
“I must commend Dean Stephen Forde and his dedicated team who do this every year outside the Cathedral. It is a Northern Ireland institution and an inspiring fundraiser.”
