Samsung C&T said Friday it has partnered with Swedish energy company Karnfull Next AB to pursue joint projects in the European small modular reactor (SMR) market.

The Korean engineering and construction company said it signed a memorandum of understanding for future joint projects with Karnfull Next at a bilateral business summit in Seoul on Thursday.

Samsung C&T said the companies plan to build an SMR power plant in Sweden by 2032 to directly supply electricity to local data centers.

Karnfull Next, a subsidiary of Swedish nuclear power company Karnfull Energi, has completed a preliminary site survey in the southeastern part of Sweden. Samsung C&T will begin tasks, such as technology selection and environmental impact assessments.

The Swedish government plans to augment the country's nuclear energy capacity by at least 2,500 megawatts by 2035 in response to planned data center expansions by tech giants, such as Microsoft and Amazon, in the European nation. (Yonhap)
