RTE Late Late Show viewers 'switch off' as 'regular guest' makes return

3 months ago 306

Viewers of the Late Late Show expressed disappointment with the show's lineup on Friday, suggesting that the guest selection was lacklustre and noting that one performer seems to feature rather too frequently. The critique isn't new, as RTÉ's flagship programme is often said not to attract as many A-list celebrities as its counterparts such as the Graham Norton Show or other late-night contenders.

Despite this, the latest episode did draw attention with BAFTA award-winning Fiona Shaw sitting down with host Patrick Kielty. Eager fans were treated to anecdotes from Shaw's illustrious career spanning five decades, touching on her memorable parts in Bad Sisters—a recent IFTA winner—Killing Eve, and discussing her newest movie 'Park Avenue', set for its grand reveal at the Dublin International Film Festival this week.

Nonetheless, reaction to the remainder of the guests was muted. Commentator John McGuirk took to social media to voice his opinion: "RTE has just sent out its weekly press release about this week's exciting Late Late Show lineup. You'll all be shocked to know that 3 of the 4 headline guests are current or former RTE employees."

This prompted a user to jestingly reply: "Brendan O'Carroll, Mario Rosenstock, Marty Morrissey and to mix it up a little, Panty Bliss? " While the mention of some consistent faces was tongue-in-cheek, Mario Rosenstock, celebrated for Gift Grub, did feature on the show, talking about his tour across Ireland and performing some of his famous impressions.

The show kicked off with Mario Rosenstock stepping in to do the introduction instead of Patrick, nailing his impression right down to the blazer. One of the first reactions on social media was from a viewer who posted: "Great to see Mario Rosenstock on the Late Late Show. It must be 12 weeks since he last featured", reports Galway Beo.

Another social media user grumbled: "Mario Rosenstock must be blackmailing someone, he is on every 3 months,

"RTÉ talking to RTÉ about RTÉ," another person commented. The programme also saw Kathryn Thomas discussing her new documentary The Skinny Jab Revolution.

The show also featured Kathryn Thomas discussing her new documentary The Skinny Jab Revolution. In this new two-parter, Kathryn explores the rise of these revolutionary drugs and asks why we still need to address the root cause of obesity, despite these advances?

Dancing with the Stars presenter Doireann Garrihy was on to chat about her recent winter wedding and her return to RTÉ 2FM, as she prepares to take up her new drive time radio slot.

For the musical guest, it was the Late Late debut of BIIRD, an eleven-piece all-female supergroup.

"It was basically an RTÉ love in. Rosenstock and someone from a weight loss show. Is the Fiona Shaw interview even live I wonder?" one viewer wrote.
