Rory McIlroy breaks silence on divorce U-turn with wife Erica Stoll in new documentary

Rory McIlroy has opened up about his decision to reverse course on divorcing his wife Erica Stoll last year. In May 2024, he made headlines by filing for divorce in Florida, just a day after clinching his fourth Wells Fargo Championship victory, citing the marriage as "irretrievably broken".

However, he retracted the divorce petition a month later, sparking widespread speculation among fans and media about the state of their relationship. At that time, McIlroy addressed the situation, saying: "There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool's game."

He added, "Over the past weeks Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning."

Now, McIlroy has touched upon the issue in a new Netflix documentary. Speaking in episode three of 'Full Swing', a series that tracks the lives of top golfers, he commented: "Thankfully everything has worked out for the best and we're happy and moving forward and I can't wait for what lies ahead."

He also opened up about the challenges in balancing his roles, "Sometimes I struggle with the balance of being the best golfer, the best husband or the best dad.", reports RSVP Live.

When Rory McIlroy filed for divorce in May, a statement from his team read: "Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."

Rory and Erica Stoll began dating in 2015, having met three years prior at the Medinah Ryder Cup. At the time, Erica was working as a PGA transport official.

They became engaged in Paris in December 2015 and married in a lavish ceremony at Ashford Castle in April 2017. Their daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, was born on August 31, 2020.Erica, originally from New York, is a keen tennis player who studied marketing at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

She secured her dream job with the PGA of America and went on to become the Manager of Championship Volunteer Operations in 2011. Before dating Rory, he was engaged to Danish tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki.
