PAYETTE – Multiple people were hospitalized in an early morning crash in western Idaho, at least one of whom is local.

It happened Sunday around 5:15 a.m. on Interstate 84 south of New Plymouth, according to a news release from Idaho State Police.

An unidentified 18-year-old girl from Rexburg was headed west in a 2020 Kia Soul with a passenger. The passenger’s name and hometown was not specified.

For some reason, the girl hit the median barrier at milepost 13. As she veered back into the lane of travel, a 52-year-old woman driving behind her in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee hit her. ISP reports both vehicles rolled and came to rest upside down in the middle of the highway.

The woman driving the Jeep is from Middleton.

Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt.

The people in the Kia were airlifted to a local hospital. The woman in the Jeep was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Their conditions are unknown.

The road was blocked for about five and a half hours while emergency crews were on scene.

ISP is still investigating the crash.
