A Co Fermanagh family had been left trapped after 'hundreds of trees' blocked access to their home after Storm Éowyn.

Police responded to an emergency call from the family living in a rural area of the county who had no heat, electricity, "dwindling" resources and managed to get an emergency phone signal.

On Monday, officers in the area were able to deliver basic supplies to the home by crossing fields to ensure there were no emergency issues in the home.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Officers from the District Support Team responded to a dropped 999 call from a family in rural Fermanagh who were trapped in their home with very intermittent emergency phone signal, no electric or source of heat and dwindling food supplies.

"We responded and found the long laneway to their property completely covered in 100’s of fallen trees.

"We set off on foot with some basic supplies from a nearby property crossing several fields to check in on the family and ensure there were no ongoing emergency issues.

"A big thank you to the Forest Service staff in Enniskillen and Greentown Environmental who also responded quickly to our call for assistance and started the laborious process of cutting through hundreds of fallen trees."

They continued: "There are still a lot of rural phone masts, phone lines and electricity lines out of action so please check in on your vulnerable neighbours!

"We are sure there are still many vulnerable people out there who need help at the moment. If you think we can assist, please get in touch and we will do our best to help out alongside our other various government and charity partners."
