A popular pizza takeaway in Co Down has closed with owners blaming "spiralling costs".

Pizza Umami, which has a five-star rating on Tripadvisor and customers praising the quality of the food, announced its closure on Friday [December 27].

In a brief statement published on social media, Pizza Umami said: "It is with heavy heart I write this, Pizza Umami ltd has closed down."

Operating from a mobile unit close to the beach in Newcastle, Pizza Umami had earned rave reviews for the quality of their offering.

Earlier this month, the owners announced a temporary closure following flood damage.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote: "Great authentic takeaway pizza. Better than an dominoes or pizza hut. Well worth the drive through Newcastle and stopping. Feel like I need to drive from belfast to get another. Great staff and fantastic service. Definitely worth a visit."

Another described the pizza as the "best available in Northern Ireland".

Announcing the closure, the owners said: "I wish we didn't have to, but spiralling costs have made the business too difficult to continue operating. Thank-you to staff, customers and suppliers for working with us over the years."
