At some point during the training, the retired lieutenant running the training took out the weapon and fired a shot, striking the woman.
WASHINGTON — A special police officer (SPO) was shot and killed during a training exercise at the Anacostia Library in Southeast D.C. Thursday afternoon.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. at the library on Good Hope Road.
In a press conference Thursday evening, MPD Chief Robert Contee claimed a retired MPD lieutenant was conducting ASP Baton training in a library room. At some point during the training, the retired lieutenant took out the weapon and fired a shot, striking the woman.
ASP Batons are expandable batons commonly used by law enforcement. It is not clear why a live weapon was in the room during baton training, or why it was fired.
When officers arrived they found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound, unconscious and not breathing. The woman was taken to a hospital for help where she was pronounced dead.
Officials have not identified the woman other than saying she was a special police officer.
