Two Northern Ireland drivers were caught speeding at over 90mph during sub-zero temperatures this week, the PSNI has revealed.

The drivers were detected by police conducting early morning speed checks along the A4 Belfast Road in Co Fermanagh on Monday morning, during temperatures of -2°C.

During the operation, officers detected vehicles travelling at 93, 92, 82 and 80mph. Two of the drivers will be attending court as a result while the other two were issued with Endorsable Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) of £65 and three penalty points.

Police in the area also detected a van driving in morning traffic in Enniskillen with its windscreen frozen over. The van was found to have no insurance and was seized as a result.

Posting on the Police Fermanagh & Omagh Facebook page, a PSNI spokesperson said: "On Monday the 9th December Enniskillen and Omagh Roads Policing Interceptors conducted early morning speed checks along the A4 Belfast Road, Brookeborough.

"The temperature was -2 degrees celsius and care should be taken at this temperature as there is a risk of ice on the road. During this operation we detected vehicles travelling at 93, 92, 82 and 80 miles per hour. Two drivers will be attending court as a result and two have been issued ‘endorsable fixed penalty notices’ of £65 with three penalty points."

They added: "We also detected a van driving in morning traffic in Enniskillen with its windscreen frozen over. You can see from the picture that the driver couldn’t read a sign only a few meters away. The windscreen of any vehicle should be clear of frost before making a journey.

"The van didn’t have any insurance and it was seized as a result. The driver will be attending court for offences including not having a full view of the road ahead and no insurance."
