The police, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and the Presidential Security Service (PSS) met Tuesday to discuss the execution of a warrant to detain President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived imposition of martial law.
The meeting came amid speculation investigators, led by the CIO, will make a second attempt to detain Yoon this week following a failed bid early this month.
The three sides met for about an hour but reportedly came away with few results.
"We requested the cooperation of the Presidential Security Service for the safe and peaceful execution of the warrant, and are waiting for its response," the police said in a notice to the press.
The CIO and the police have reportedly made plans to mobilize around 1,000 investigators to ensure the success of a second attempt at detaining Yoon after the first attempt was thwarted by PSS personnel blocking their entry into Yoon's official residence in Seoul.
Yoon is believed to be holed up at his residence since the National Assembly impeached him on Dec. 14, suspending him from duty.
The CIO has been issued two consecutive court warrants to detain Yoon on charges of insurrection and abuse of power related to his imposition of martial law on Dec. 3.
The ongoing effort has raised concerns about a possible physical clash between law enforcement, the PSS and thousands of protesters who have gathered outside Yoon's residence for weeks to rally for or against his arrest. (Yonhap)
