POCATELLO — Registration is now open for the 26th annual “Run with the Big Dogs,” a 2K walk/run and 5K run that benefits the Pocatello Animal Shelter.

“This is such a great event! We love seeing all the dogs and people out and about,” said Chris Abbott, Pocatello Animal Services Director. “A big thank you to all of our participants, sponsors and The Friends of the Pocatello Animal Shelter who continue to make this event a success every year.”

The event will take place on April 15 at 9 a.m. at Lower Ross Park, next to the aquatic complex.

All pets are welcome to participate, but must be kept on a leash. Females cannot be in heat. If you don’t have a pet to walk or run with, you can also just run with yourself.

“I know the majority of us are having cabin fever; we’re ready to get out. So it’s kind of a good kick off to the spring to get out,” said Shea Cooper, Event Coordinator of the Friends of the Pocatello Animal Shelter. “You can participate whether you have four-legged friends or not.”

After the runners return from their treks they’ll be able to shop local vendors, participate in a silent auction and let their dogs enjoy splash pools. Refreshments for humans and their four-legged friends will also be provided.

Cooper said that those who participate in this event not only get to enjoy all the events of the day, but they also get to support the animals in the Pocatello Animal Shelter.

“It’s just so important to support our local shelter, because they do have so many needs between food and enrichment toys, beds, blankets to help these um homeless pets, whether it be dogs or cats,” Cooper said.

Cooper also wanted to remind people that even if they can’t attend the event, they can still donate to support the animal shelter.

“So if you can’t attend the event you can donate to friends on our website. It’s just paramount to keeping our board running so that we can continue to support the shelter,” Cooper said.

Registration for those 13 years and older is $45 per participant. Children’s registration is $30 per participant. Participants who register before April 8 can save $15 on their registration cost per person with the code RWTBD26. They will also get a T-shirt and a “doggy bag” full of freebies. Everyone who registers for the event will also be entered into a prize drawing.
