Over 4.3 million passengers traveled via Korea's airports during this year's Lunar New Year holiday period, government data showed Friday.
According to the transport ministry data submitted to the office of Rep. Lee Yeon-hee of the main opposition Democratic Party, a combined 4,332,848 departed from and arrived at 13 airports nationwide from Jan. 24 through Sunday.
The figure marks an approximately twofold increase from the 2.09 million tallied during last year's Lunar New Year holiday period, according to the data.
Incheon International Airport recorded the highest passenger traffic with 2.19 million travelers, followed by Jeju International Airport and Gimpo International Airport with around 591,000 passengers and 476,000 passengers, respectively.
Muan International Airport, which remains closed since the Dec. 29 Jeju Air crash, was excluded from the tally.
In terms of overseas travel, Japan remained the most popular destination, recording 789,829 travelers flying to and from the country. China ranked second with 391,635 passengers, followed by Vietnam with 345,818 passengers. (Yonhap)
