Northern Ireland weather tracker live as wind warning to come into force

A yellow weather for wind issued by the Met Office is set to come into force in parts of Northern Ireland.

The alert will come into place at 6am on Friday, February 21, and will remain in place until 10am on the same day.

The warning covers Co Antrim, Co Down, and Co Armagh. The Met Office said: "Strong and gusty southerly winds may cause disruption to transport and infrastructure.

"A brief spell of strong and gusty southerly winds will likely coincide with rush hour on Friday. Gusts of 45-55 mph are likely across the warning area, with exposed coasts and hills of counties Down and Antrim could see brief gusts of 65 mph."

A further yellow alert for wind comes into force at 3am on Sunday, February 23, and will remain in force until 3pm on the same day.

The alert covers the entire region. The forecaster said: "Strong winds may lead to some disruption on Sunday."

It added: "Southerly winds are expected to increase through Sunday morning, peaking late morning to early afternoon with gusts of 50-60mph, and perhaps as much as 70mph on the exposed Irish Sea coastline and some other areas of high ground.

"Rain will accompany strong winds, which will make for very poor weather conditions, especially on roads. Winds are expected to ease slowly through the afternoon."

Northern Ireland weather forecast for the next few days, according to the Met Office:

Thursday night:

Mainly dry with clear spells this evening, any showers soon dying out. Outbreaks of heavy rain then pushing in from the south late in the night. Breezy and mild. Minimum temperature 7C.

Friday:

Heavy rain with strong to gale force southerly winds, severe at first around the east coast. Drier and brighter conditions then developing in the afternoon with a scattering of showers. Maximum temperature 12C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Bright with scattered showers on Saturday. More wet and windy weather on Sunday, gales or severe coastal gales, then bright with occasional showers on Monday.
