Northern Ireland snow and ice warnings extended by Met Office

5 months ago 245

Many homes across Northern Ireland woke on Tuesday morning to sheets of white snow across their gardens and streets - and that scene is set to stay, with new weather warnings issued.

The Met Office says a new warning will come into effect this afternoon, just a few hours after a warning which was issued yesterday, was due to end. A snow and ice warning, from 3pm today, will cover the whole of Northern Ireland, and is set to continue through to 12noon tomorrow, Wednesday January 8.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Showers of rain and sleet near coasts, and snow inland, will continue to affect Northern Ireland this afternoon and into this evening.

"Overnight, showers should become confined to coastal areas. With winds easing, it is likely to be a much colder night than last night, bringing widespread frost and icy patches.

"Snow and icy patches will lead to some disruption to travel. Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

"Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

Seven schools were forced to close their doors this morning, due to the extreme weather.

List of school closures due to adverse weather, according to NI Direct:
