A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his daughter Malika Noor Al Katib.
Mohammad Shaker Al Tamimi, 34, appeared at a special sitting of Gorey District Court in Co Wexford this evening.
He is alleged to have murdered Malika, eight, at the family home on Lower William Street in New Ross on Sunday evening. He faces a further charge of the attempted murder of her mother Aisha Al Katib, 31, on the same date.
Mr Shaker Al Tamimi, wearing dark jogging bottoms and a blue blanket, said nothing when he appeared in front of Judge Kevin Staunton at this evening's court sitting. The proceedings were translated for him by an Arabic interpreter.
Detective Garda Donal Doyle, of New Ross Garda Station, told the court he arrested Mr Shaker Al Tamimi at University Hospital Waterford at 12.30pm on Tuesday. He said he charged Mr Shaker Al Tamimi with the two offences at 5.04pm today at Wexford Garda station.
"He made no reply to each charge," Det Garda Doyle told the Judge.
The District Court does not have the power to deal with the question of bail in a murder charge and Mr Shaker Al Tamimi was remanded in custody. He is due to appear again at Wexford District Court by video link on Monday.
Judge Staunton granted an application for legal aid by defence solicitor Tim Cummings. And the judge also ordered that Mr Shaker Al Tamimi be psychologically evaluated in custody.
Mr Cummings also said he has received no instructions to make a bail application.
